While running the McAfee antivirus software, some users have encountered the error message “McAfee error M98.” If you’re also receiving this runtime error message on your computer, then perform the simple troubleshooting instructions given below to fix it.
Basically, almost all runtime errors happen unexpectedly. The McAfee error M98 occurs when the McAfee Virus Scan process fails to complete or crashes unexpectedly. Resolve this error by performing the simple troubleshooting methods given below.
Method 1: Detect and close the conflicting programs
In most cases, the conflicting programs will be the main reason behind the runtime errors. So, as the first step of the troubleshooting process, close the conflicting programs on your Windows computer.
Step 1: On your Windows computer, open the Task Manager window.
Step 2: Click on the Processes tab.
Step 3: Stop all the programs running in the Task Manager window. To do so, right-click on the program and select the End task button.
Step 4: After stopping each program, run the McAfee application and check if the error M98 is resolved. If not, stop the next program and continue it until the error gets cleared.
Step 5: Once you find the program that is causing the issue, uninstall it and restart your computer. After your computer restarts, reinstall the uninstalled program on your computer.
Method 2: Reinstall the Runtime libraries
If you receive the McAfee error M98 after installing the runtime libraries, then check whether the libraries are installed properly; because there is a chance for an issue to occur if the libraries are not installed correctly. To reinstall the runtime libraries, first, uninstall the existing ones from your computer.
Step 1: Open the Programs & Features window on your Windows computer.
Step 2: Choose the Runtime library that you have installed recently.
Step 3: Click on the Uninstall button followed by Yes. Once the library is uninstalled, restart your computer.
Step 4: Reinstall the uninstalled library after your computer restarts.
Method 3: Run Disk Cleanup
Sometimes, low storage space may also cause the M98 runtime error. To resolve it, run Disk Cleanup on your computer.
Step 1: Initially, back up the important files stored on your computer.
Step 2: Now, in the Explorer window, select and right-click on the Main directory.
Step 3: Select Properties > Disk Cleanup.
Step 4: If necessary, clean the cache data stored on your computer.
Step 5: After running the disk cleanup, reboot your Windows computer.
